Meet Betty Kiger

Betty C. Kiger, CPAHello, I’m Betty Kiger, founder and owner of a public accounting firm in Winston-Salem, NC, Betty C. Kiger, CPA.

While growing up on my family’s dairy farm in Elizabethton, Tennessee, learning life lessons about business and money, arithmetic was always my favorite subject in school.

My passion for numbers continued through high school and I acquired my first job working at J.C. Penney in the office counting and handling money.  Even though I didn’t know any female accountants to serve as role models, I decided to become an accountant.

Once I started studying accounting at East Tennessee State University, I realized my chosen profession was about much more than math.  There was analysis involved and interesting, creative problem solving.  This made me love accounting so much more.  I earned my college tuition through a work-study scholarship, tutoring other students in accounting study hall, and I graduated magna cum laude.

After graduation, I worked in both public and corporate accounting in Tennessee before moving to Winston-Salem in 1981 to work for Pilot Freight Carriers as Director of Accounting, managing 15 employees.

When Pilot Freight closed in 1989, I started my own public accounting firm.

Since starting my firm, I’ve focused on providing accounting and tax services for small and medium-sized businesses in and around Winston-Salem as well as helping the business owners and other individuals with tax planning and state and federal tax return preparation.

Besides me, there are three year-round staff members.  We add another staff member during tax season to handle the increased work load.
